West country news have been filming the harbour staff at work in Salcombe for a series on the Environment. This article from the WMN is quite interesting in that it shows you what the harbour staff do in the winter, you probably would not usually give the checkig of moorings a second thought....however it paints a nice happy and salt of the earth picture of Salcombe harbour authority, however, Mike Barrows comments on the article hold very true. Salcombe harbour as a yachting destination is still in huge decline; charges are high, facilities are non existent and restaurants fully booked in advance all summer. Add to that the fact that visiting yachts can't even buy a decent range of groceries and you can clearly see why the boats go elsewhere.
This has to change or Salcombe will just become a playground for the rich. I have no truck with second home owners or wealthy holiday makers, in fact I appreciate just what they have bought to the town, but we need a healthy mix of visitors or we are doomed to a homogeneous parade of Quba jackets and 4x4's...
