I came across this article in the Daily Mail whilst sat in a Cafe Nero in London (away with work) and thought; "aaah excellent some good coverage for Salcombe". How wrong I was. Now I know I should not expect much more from the Daily Mail and here I'd like to make it clear that it was left in the cafe and I DID NOT BUY IT!
The entire article does Salcombe a complete disservice and puts it in a light that none of us wants to see it put in. The whole tone of the article is pompous and arrogant. The South Sands hotel comes out of it ok but the rest of it makes Salcombe sound like a an idiots enclave.
I love the fact that Salcombe attracts all types but the image of upper class wannabees clad in v-neck sweaters and polo shirts is ridiculous and untrue, the journalist is getting us confused with Thurlstone! And if I was "Moonraker Mike" (do people really call him that?) I would be suing the journalist for me making me look like an utter tit.
If anyone is reading this blog after reading the Daily Mail article I urge you to ignore it and come and see what Salcombe is really like; I can guarantee you that it isn't remotely like this article makes out.

this blog could be a great advocate for the charms of salcombe if it was updated more than once every few months.
Apologies to al labout lack of recent posts...it's been a manic few months at work. I promise more posts this year!
Just read the Daily Mail article online just to see what all the fuss was about...............Not much really...looks as though it was really more about advertising the South Sands Hotel.
Yes, the writer wrote about the cloth shops but that is really all there is in the town apart from the pubs and a few coffee shops etc.
You come here if you like it and you dont come if you dont like it.
Some people eh! lol
Ooops....apologies for the schoolboy spelling mistake....it should have read "clothes shops".........Some people eh! lol
I didn't think it was that bad actually - but it's nice to see you back on here!
Great to see your blog running again. The Daily Mail is a ridiculous "newspaper", but this article was not too bad. (Makes a change from the usual smug anti immigrant ranting).Probably reflects the journalist's free junket at the South Sands!
"(Makes a change from the usual smug anti immigrant ranting)"
If you like our immigrant friends so much why dont you allow them to set up a ghetto in Salcombe and while your at it, give them a hand to build a Mosque along Devon rd!!!
No? didn't think so!
Thats the problem with some rural folk, its out of site out of mind.
Re the above stupid Anonymous comment - I think if you read what I said, my thoughts referred to my views on the Daily Mail, not my views on immigration.Try not to guess what my political preferences might be.Also you might want to stick to the subject! This is a Salcombe blog celebrating this fantastic place not a platform for your biased views on us countryfolk.
I think Pot and kettle come to mind Salcombebloke?
I have read what you said and I can only surmise if you feel the Daily Mail writes smug articles on immigration, it contravene's your opinion, otherwise why write it in that tone?
Anyway, back to Salcombe!
a ghetto in salcombe may help it come back to reality from all the poncy second home owners that come down here lol.....same result (landmarks that made salcombe get destroyed for overpriced homes that are lived in for a few weeks every year) but a cheaper living for those who stay all year round. As for a Mosque in devon road i think objections would be raised simply for architectural reasons
As for the article it just told the truth salcombe is now what the holiday trade has made it - a ghost town most the year round with useless shops that cater for holiday makers so whats said will only serve to bring more in, if (god willing) it puts some off then all the better
To Salcombe bloke and anonymous -
Me and my brothers holiday in south devon every year. We muslims offer only peace and hapiness to all who reside in salcombe. One day we hope to raise funds for a mosque in the area. This will help build peace and harmony for all.
Read the Mail Article and then had a look at the South Sands Hotel website. Can you believe it, they have a Webcam permanently pointed at the beach so that I can see what the day is like on the south sands beach.... marvellous. thank you to the Hotel.

thank you
Some people may not have liked the Daily Mail feature on Salcombe - but yet again tonight, a couple of people in The Victoria ARE here in Salcombe because of the article!
They realised it was a while since they visited and the article prompted them to come visit again........
