Recession Proof Salcombe

With all the recent press comment that Salcombe and it's equivalents in the South West are seeing a spike in house prices, due to city money that is once again flowing, I thought I would see what the half term influx was likely to be in Salcombe. I logged onto www.salcombe.com, the home of Salcombe Holiday Homes and input a search for availability over half term; the results were surprising as there was pretty much nothing left to rent. So based on this I presume we can expect to see a very busy Salcombe over half term.

So my question is: "Is Salcombe recession proof"?

The availability of Salcombe holiday homes has always been very limited. There are alot of repeat bookings and properties tend to be let as soon as the brochure becomes available the previous autumn.I would imagine that most of these bookings were made many months ago!

Of course Salcombe is affected by the recession. On a positive note the number of visitors is still good, due to euro and dollar exchange rates and people holidaying at home. Oct half term is busy with returning holiday cottage hirers and owners although Coast and Country Cottages still have 20 plus properties to rent with 5 days to go. However on a negative note not so much money is being spent by these visitors in local shops and restaurants.£40 pink and blue rugby shirts are not selling so well! Many day trippers have visited in the last few weeks encouraged by the good weather. The comment on house prices and sale volumes is still wishful thinking -have a look at actual sales to get a proper picture.

We have been very fortunate that with the exception of a couple of very quiet lunch hours we have remained very steady - thankfully.

This weekend has been very good with us doing a huge amount of business..... apparently many of the private schools have broken up already for 2 weeks!

Is Salcombe affected by the recession..?? Yes, I think it is -many of our regular 'holiday' customers are still spending as usual, but quite a few of the day trippers have said how expensive they think Salcombe is.

I agree with spearfish's point.

How busy do you expect the town to be over Christmas?

I would imagine the local population's shopping habits would not have changed a great deal and 2nd home owners who generally have good disposable incomes will carry on normally?
People still come on holiday for the peak 8 weeks in the Summer plus Easter and other seasonal breaks but are they still spending the same, according to Liz from The Victoria its been a fantastic year which if all things being equal will be mirrored at the other pubs and restaurants in town.

We know house sales are dramatically down but are they spending on other high value items such as new boats and that in turn creates aftersales business with servicing, engines, clothes, spares etc?

Im not so sure Salcombe has been left completely unscathed?
