Salcombe Celebrity Second Home Owner Steve Ryder a NIMBY!

Most of you will have already have seen this but I am dying to hear your thoughts on the subject...

Steve Ryder of "Grandstand" fame and a second home owner in East Portlemouth (Salcombe) has objected to Isobel Waterhouse's planning application to build affordable housing alongside Steve's second home in East Portlemouth. On the surface of it it seems a pure "not in my back yard" situation, Steve claims the location is not suitable for affordable housing as there are no local services or even a shop...so why is this a problem for someone poorer than Steve? Does his wealth mean he doesn't need a shop? I am confused....

In his letter to South Hams Council he said: 'The actual character of East Portlemouth is one of unique peace and solitude, the perfect contrast to Salcombe, a few hundred yards away. If this is threatened, it could be lost forever. So Steve...are you saying that poor people are noisy and troublesome?

I totaly agree with him that if the planning application is going to make East P over developed or create an eyesore then it should be turned down...nothing should threaten our shorelines or the original character of the area, however if it is, as the press are making it seem, more a case of NIMBY then Steve you really should hang your head in shame!

Read The Telegraph and Daily Mail articles on the situation...

To be fair to Steve Ryder his point was that just because a development had the title Social Housing wasn't a reason to ignore the policies that applied to other development in an AONB. We should not forget that at some stage a "local" will have made a tidy sum when they sold to a DFT. I still can't work out who is going to live in these "affordable" homes, how they are going to get to work, shop, educate their children and get to hospital, what I do know is that there has been no development on that side of the road below Norton, so the character of this village will change. Another development to watch is at Gerston ...

GERSTON!?!??! What's happening down there? Do you mean Tony Soper's old house on the waterside?

Yeah that's where Tony Soper, the TV birdman, used to live. I thought that this had been thrown out last year...looks like it's a developer rather than an owner occupier. Just another nail in the shoreline of Kingsbrige estuary...such a shame...but money talks and I suppose it always will...although I had thought that when redeveloping a site the square footage had to remain the same...it's doubling here!!

You lot aren't usually reticent to comment on these matters....WHERE ARE YOU?

In my previous life (before moving to Salcombe) I was in local government for 20 years, and latterly before my change of career I was head of a local housing association in Hampshire. I am firmly of the belief that EVERYONE is entitled to a roof over their head - wherever that roof may be. I personally can't see how a development of 6 (?) properties will drastically affect the area - what concern's me far more is the infrastructure to support the families placed in these homes...? Traditionally and without wish to sterotype - groups of people in need of social housing often don't have their own transport - so how will they and their families attend schools, playgoups - shops - how will they access Health care? It's the social isolation aspect that concerns me far more than whether Mr Ryder objects or not.....

It's a fair point as it is very isolated over in EP unless you park your car in Salcombe and drive from there or utilise Salcombes services...but then you rely on the ferry service or a boat and good weather...however EP can't have been populated by holiday makers for ever can it...I have never thought about it before...but I have also never known anyone other than a second home owner who lives there!!

I haven't looked at the plans, but as long as the properties look in keeping with the area, I don't see why there should be a problem. The properties would bring a bit more life back to the village and perhaps someone will open up some local facilities. I vaguely remember there being a general store / post office in EP until a few years ago.

There was a post office just up from the top of the steps where you get off the ferry...which I presume is now a nice (expensive) cottage for someone?!?!?

I think you will find that the owners of the shop found it no longer viable, tried to sell it as a going concern, then converted it to a house for their own use.

I cannot see how these houses are viable, where is the work for these families and how are they going to get access to the infrastructure such as schools, healthcare etc?

Just because someone is generous to provide the land and housing, isn't a good reason to ride a coach and horses through planning policy that is not available to all (including other locals).

Good to see common sense has prevailed and the planners have granted permission for the development at Gerston. Footprint of the new property is five times the size of Tony's old house.Look forward to the housewarming.
