My 2009 Salcombe wish list...

Sorry for the lack of blogging, I've been to the IOW for a week and the promised internet access didn't work! Great place the IOW, well worth a visit. Cowes made me laugh, it's like Salcombe but bigger and with even more clothes shops! However unlike Salcombe many shops/cafes were closed for the winter...I presume summer trade produces so much money that winter opening isn't necessary...most of Salcombe can only dream about this!

Anyway here is my wish list for Salcombe for 2009, I'd love to hear yours....

1. Pedestrianisation of Fore St in June/July/August.
2. Regatta week is not cancelled.
3. The owners of Millbay don't try to cordon off any more of the beach for their private use! There seems to be a growing interest in control of the beaches by the owners...this can't be good. The owner of Fishermans refused the regatta committee permission to let off fireworks last summer.
4. The harbour office don't replace the chains on the Batson pontoons with stanchions and ruin a beautiful creek.
5. The South Sands hotel opens and is successful.
6. The Marine Hotel development is downgraded and the proposed pontoons are not granted planning permission.
7. The Kings Arms cleans up it's awful dirty and dowdy beer garden, the new terrace is great but the beer garden is horrendous.
8. Salcombe doesn't become a celebrity hang out!
9. The harbour scraps their ridiculous charge for over-nighting on Whitestrand.
10. The sun actually comes out for at least 1 day!

Here is one reason I cant wait for it to hit.
I have had a second home V close to Salcombe for 20 years and Kept a boat in Salcombe for 15 of those.
I have only ever spent on and in Local. But the reception second home owners get is disgusting, without going into detail, Its too expensive for everything. The arrogance is all about to backfire
Can't wait. Then we will see if you need the "GROCKALLS"

Easy tiger!!!! It can't be that bad...can it? I know Salcombe has very "local" locals who aren't that wecloming but on the whole the locals are pretty decent...

Its not Just Salcombe,I can understand that Locals find it hard to get on the house mkt( that was) and I do sympathise, However its not 2nd home owners fault.
We put a tremendous amount of money into the Local community helping the economy, And I am really sick of reading about it in the Western Morning news.
The trouble is Salcombe on a sunny summers day is one of the best places in the world to be.
But as you can see thee other stuff after 20 years has really started to grate on me.

My 2009 Salcombe wish list is:

1) A continuation of the friendships we've started to make

2) That my own personal health continues to improve - the sea air is doing me good (so far)

3) That the 'invasion' of holidaymakers in the town is no where near as bad as everyone keeps telling me.... I shall wait with baited breath for Easter. A slight double edged sword for us of course as we want (need) our business to grow - but I rather love Salcombe as it is right now......

Lastly, as really new 'outsiders' we haven't encountered anything but kindness and warmth from locals (and local locals as well) so not sure where the 'arrogance' comes from??? If it's there and it does 'backfire' what would that do to Salcombe as a whole..??

Yes, Salcombe is expensive for almost everything, but the overheads down here are massive! On the whole though, I'm thinking it's about the lovliest place I've ever lived in my whole life.

Easter is the worst as the influx seems to be arrogant affluent 4x4 drivers with no regard for anyone...other than that the holiday trade is brilliant. The second home owners are on the whole lovely...they love Salcombe and more importantly spend money there!

On a sunny day nothing anywhere in the world compares to Salcombe! I love it when it's busy as there is a great buzz but also out of season when it's quiet and peaceful....

Quite simply Salcombe Rocks!!!

Salcombe exists because of the visitors. Most locals understand that without the funds provided by the Second Home owners and summer renters, although the place would still look good (although not as smart!), most of the population would be on benefits, as fishing/farming/shipbuilding is now only practiced by a few. No pubs, restaurants, cafes, clothes shops would continue in business. We all have to get along, understand local market forces, and the perilous state of the economy under Mr Brown. Lets avoid the locals v second home owners arguments. Those who get a living off the tourists should remember the customer counts!! - and has a good memory and won't return for crap service or poor value for money.

11th wish - not to get overrun by the Russians who are making big money noises.

Anonymous said...

aaah the Russians.....do we need look outs on Bolt Head?

Anonymous said...

perhaps the Russians are not here in the numbers initially suspected now - certainly not buying property! - another Estate Agent has now closed (Temporary move to their Kingsbridge office),- and then there was one!
