Pedestrianise Salcombe Fore Street Now!

I was walking through Salcombe, Fore Street on Wednesday and it was utter chaos, buggies, people and cars everywhere. Now, it was raining and blowing a gale as seems the norm for this years summer, so no-one was on the beach, but why oh why do people need to drive through Fore Street?!? I can't really think of any reason why people other than the park and ride bus, the odd resident and traders/workmen actually need to drive through?

It seems like most people that drive through do so in order to pose. Most cars are either huge expensive 4X4's or young lads in "chaved-up" Citroen's or Vuaxhall's with exhausts that you could fit a football up....

The solution seems simple pedestrianise Salcombe's Fore Street for July and August. Anyone who was in Salcombe for the Red Arrows will have noticed what a pleasant experience it was to have Fore St to ourselves and not have to worry about cars squashing you against the Kings Arms wall....or running down your kids.

The other option this would then throw up is having Whitestrand car park as an open space for summer.

It seems sensible to me but I am sure there will be others who disagree??

Best to shut it 10am to 6pm in July and August, with the exception of residents, delivery vehicles etc. The shops have to keep in business!!

I had my foot run over by a car here recently which besides being painful at the time is still causing me problems. When remonstrating with the pompous driver (yes a 4 x4!!) all he said was "Hop it" and drove off.

Different topic here. Agree, though - the traffic is crazy.

Hi - would you please put onto your site an appeal for a lost toy. We lost Lottie/Ellie (Humphrey's corner) soft toy between the 10th and 16th August, either in Salcombe or Kingsbridge, we think. It's my 6 year old's bedtime toy and is sadly missed. Link appeal at http://hrht-revisingreform.blogspot.com/2008/08/lost-something-else-in-salcombe-too.html

Thank you so much

Great idea, -will give me more time to study Charles Head's and Marchant Petit's windows, searching for property bargains.

you cant ban the hoorays....who else would there be to laugh at? Just stop them driving their huge 4 x 4's through town! There are many other 4x4 drivers who dont seem to feel the need to drive through town...

Drove my Hummer along Fore St without any problems.Later when I was stuck trying to get through the narrow bits on the way to North Sands, ought to be made wider, I found a coouple of small kids squashed on the bumper. Soon wiped off though with a decent chammy.
