The Best Salcombe Regatta Ever

With one day still to run this years Salcombe Town Regatta is, in the opinion of the Salcombe Blog, the best ever! After all the supposed infighting and rumours of last years regatta being the final one we have been treated to something rather fantastic…

The Red Arrows were magnificent! The sight of 9 Red Arrows over the Salcombe Estuary was absolutely breath taking and hopefully a sight that will become a regular event in Salcombe over the next few years. Then we had last night’s fireworks, which were a considerable step-up from the usual event and well worth watching.

The atmosphere in and around Whitestrand last (Thursday) evening was really fantastic, the Dave Masefield Jazz Band was brilliant and really made the evening special. The place was packed with every age group all drinking and eating and having a great time. There was not a hint of trouble or loutish behaviour and families cold happily mix with the 18/19 year olds (the Jack Wills brigade) out for an evenings drinking and fun.

For me the pedestrianisation of Fore Street was a major factor in the success of both events. Quite why we have to put up with traffic in Fore St during August is beyond me, as I have mentioned many times on this blog. However, I have heard from a reliable source that Fore St will finally be traffic free for August from next year, thank-you Salcombe Town Council, a decent decision at last!

Anyway The Salcombe Blog would like to say a HUGE thank-you to the Town Regatta committee for what is undoubtedly a lot of hard work for everyone involved. It has been brilliant and roll on the 2010 regatta.

As you know, it's our first Regatta and there are two things - business wise it's been a very good time so far, but secondly and as important to us - it's that we've loved the 'buzz' in town!!!

Absolutely excellent..... I can't imagine living anywhere else in the world now!

It was good for many reasons but I personally feel it was dragged out this year. The two Regatta weeks are usually booked together for alot of families with the running race kicking off on the first Sunday morning of the Town week, this year its carried over into the following week when most people who had booked the two weeks would have gone home on the Friday or Saturday. That also applies to the duck race, swimming gala and prize giving, all held on the following Saturday?

The fun run (this morning) was moved on request from the police, due to the Red Arrows performing at midday on the first Sunday.

We were on our yearly visit and on Mill Bay beach at the time of the Red Arrows, what an amazing sight to see the jets roaring right over our heads. We also came out of Dusters to see the fireworks, they looked great over the backdrop of the harbour. Salcombe as awesome as ever, good food, potent ales, clean beaches and the weather was reasonably kind to us. Didn't see any refernces or protest around the town to the new housing development though (unless I missed it ?). See yer next year Salcombe, enjoy your autumn and winter in peace !!

Johno,

If you dont own a home in Salcombe or have missed the house to house dropoff of forms then if you are interested in making a comment re the so called affordable housing then you will need to go to the Salcombe town council website and get involved that way.

Glad you enjoyed your time in Salcombe.

Unfortunately after meeting some of the new tenants in the ghetto who have been moved to Salcombe from Coventry I cannot stress how bad more affordable housing will be.

NICE ONE SALCOMBE COUNCIL!!!!

Is that correct "Coventry"?

How possibly can that help the local people of Salcombe and immediate area?

What an absolute disgrace, any other country there would be riots for the way the morons in national and local goverments treat the people of the UK!

Unfortunately, this is what they told me after I had a few quiet words with them for kicking somebodys shop sign along Fore Street.

Living proof that the scumbag benefit scammers deserve their title.
I was surprised to see the girl of roughly sixteen not pushing a pram full of children!

If the above is true, I suppose it just goes to show how the town council try to pull the wool over our eyes for their own ulterior motives.

If you cannot afford a house in Salcombe then that should be it. Other people had to work hard for one.

Then sign the No 10 petition and write letters...we have to do something...

You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view

I dont remember any trouble coming from any of the people who have moved in to ember road (i take it this is the "ghetto" you refer to) or that any of them have come from Coventry, infact i would go as far to say that as a local 90% of the people who have moved up there are either people i went to school with or have been around the area for longer then a lot of those who consider themselves locals!

The regatta hasnt been what it was for ages now and i doubt it will ever truely be great again. it doesnt have the same feeling that it used to, the red arrows were certainly an attraction but i cant help but think that a vintage air show of wartime aircraft would have been a better use of money, for one the show would have lasted longer and im sure the cost would have been lower.

Fore Street being traffic free through August? i hope not, its a main trading road in a town, there is no reason to pedestrianize it, you just need a bit of thought from the pedestrians nowhere else do you go and find people walking in the middle of the road unless its snowing!!! you can by the way fit a tank through fore street (quite literally) so a car should be no problem, if you want to scale the traffic back, through access and parking for workers and locals, never a blanket ban on traffic.

On this subject i was thinking maybe holidaying persons should have to have a local to drive them around as the chelsea tractors that they come down in and are unnecessary seem to be the cause of a lot of congestion and i cant believe its the vehicles fault as being an area with a lot of agriculture a lot of land rovers are seen year round on the roads and even tractors dont cause as much congestion as holiday makers
