NO! to Salcombe Social Housing Plan

I think we need to take a stand and let all those involved know how we feel about their ridiculous plans...

We should all pen letters to the Gazette and copy them to the Town Council...I would also say write to Anthony Steen but it's probably waste of time as he will be spending our money on the upkeep of his mansion, however a copy of the same letter can easily go to his email...

Salcombe Town Council:townclerk@salcombetowncouncil.gov.uk
Antony Steen: steena@parliament.uk
The Gazette: jackie.smith@internet-today.co.uk

Then also send this link to all of your friends!

No10 PETITION...

Lets get this petition signed by as many people as we can. Remember this could be teh single most important thing that has happened to Salcombe for many a year!

For Gods sake there are only 8 signatures on the No 10 poll.............Where are the 33 people who have signed to stop Salcombe being another scumbag council estate where the losers who have nothing and sponge off of society have a tendancy to ruin everything that other people have worked for

It is spineless city people and dropouts who have ruined Salcombe so far.

Please please please dont let further idiots with soulless city money rape and pillage a once beautiful fishing village with trust funds and too many city bonuses for their own self gain

Make your mind up! Is it city bonuses, scumbag council estate losers or a mix of both?

The problem with your opinion is you risk upsetting everyone as not all second homes have been bought with city money, some people are quite normal folk who have stretched themselves financially to live the dream along with alot of local people now live in council/ association housing.

The world will evolve and its best to keep all parties on side to fight for the greater good of Salcombe.

Why vote on this poll but then not out your name to the No 10 Petition?? Are people scared of the rest of Salcombe knowing who is against this project??

Well at the moment 90% of people who view this site think that cheap council housing will be bad for Salcombe. Take a look at the so called affordable housing at the top of the town ..nobody is even taking care of the grounds.......Im expecting a load of gypsies to turn up soon and set up home. Nice first view of Salcombe eh....a council estate!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the difficulty here is that it there is no clear policy on how the town wishes to move forward, and if there were, what the Town Council wants seems to be out of phase with Totnes and Government policy.

Totnes planners are who you need to lobby. By all means copy to the Gazette since it stops the cover up.

My guess is that this will be a done deal with no notice being taken of public opinion.

I am not against low cost housing per se, but I would like to see a smaller number of units added per year, until local demand is met.

I would also like to see some investment in creating jobs, like some low cost business units with short leases. This would create the income to ensure people can live locally.

I am most concerned that the proposed scheme will be another step of moving the year around residents away from the town centre. If the emphasis of the town moves to the proposed areas, then people will just use there homes to sleep, and will shop and work away from Salcombe, with no benefit to the town.

A chance to make your comments known regarding the affordable scandal that is hitting Salcombe.

www.salcombetowncouncil.gov.uk

Then go to Housing Needs Survey in the left hand column.

For anybody interested, the Council have started to do a house to house drop off for people to make comments on the affordable housing.

I am 100% against it and will be filling the forms out accordingly

I live in that so called scumbag council estate on bonfire hill. I am the 7th generation of my family to live and work in Salcombe. My husband works bloody hard and we do not claim benefits.

If these affordable homes had not been built I would not have been able to stay living in this beautiful town.

My neighbours are wonderful and hard working and are all as annoyed as you at the state of the ground at the top.

I feel we could do with a few more affordable homes as I have friends who are born and bred in the town who still cannot get housed.

Maybe the council could buy back the old houses they used to own, if they ever come up for sale, and rent them out?

I know that would probably cost too much but it would maybe stop the need to build more?

We rented a house at the top end of the town near the Rugby club and it seemed reasonably decent to me. I think the previous 7th generation blogger has every right to feel insulted as being assumed branded in such a way. I know people are not naming individuals specificaly here, but when you start generalising like this, the honest hard working (and long time local) residents feel they are being tarred with the same brush.

Some of the comments here are shockingly ill informed and display prejudice unwelcome to the majority of rational and decent folk in the south hams. I can only hope that the fact that these are 'anonymous' posts reflects the embarrassment of those people making them. Salcombe is a special place, but this is DESPITE the wealth its 'inhabitants' enjoy not because of it - it is its natural beauty and heritage that is special not the value of property and the increasing number of clone shops. Social housing is essential to retaining vibrancy throughout the year, an interesting mix of people and the services they can support/provide. I vote a resounding YES for the plan and suggest people engage positively with the Council - voice your concerns and suggest solutions, but accept that people with low incomes also deserve the opportunity to live in the town.
