If I was in Charge of Salcombe...

I would:

Sack all the planners.
Pedestrianise Fore St in July and August.
Scrap the overnight charge for Whitestrand pontoon.
Make parking free all year.
Open a supermarket of some kind in Fore St.
Build some showers on Whitestrand.
Start a Salcombe half marathon.
Make Batson continually high water.
Open a shop that sold rope, shackles, boating parts etc on Fore St.
Bring "Bob" back to run The Ferry...those were the days!
Force Steve Ryder to host a Q&A on "local issues" on Whitestrand.
Make it compulsory for the bakery to open at 11pm as it used to! Did pizza, pasties and freshly baked bread ever taste so nice than after 8 pints of "Tally Ho!".

You missed one...bring back the Marine Hotel. Talking of which, doesn't anyone know what is happening with the Hotel!?

Sack all the planners.

But must get better ones instead

Pedestrianise Fore St in July and August.

Talk to the shop keepers first, there is an opinion that this would be bad for trade ... not sure if I agree

Scrap the overnight charge for Whitestrand pontoon.

Agree, it would be good if the people who kept there boats permanently at Whitestrand had somewhere else to go

Make parking free all year.

There would be nowhere for locals to park in the Summer, so how about free paring except Bank Holidays, July and August

Open a supermarket of some kind in Fore St.

Lets support Colemans, Cranches, Bonningtons, Upper Crust, Casse Croute where you can get anything you need

Build some showers on Whitestrand.

Not a bad idea, or better showers at SYC

Start a Salcombe half marathon.

Too hard for me

Make Batson continually high water.

Would need a lock gate though

Open a shop that sold rope, shackles, boating parts etc on Fore St.

Why not support Geoff and Scud instead

Bring "Bob" back to run The Ferry...those were the days!

Or Baskerville and Putt on the South Sands, landing at Splat Cove

Force Steve Ryder to host a Q&A on "local issues" on Whitestrand.

Salcombe Festival stage?

Make it compulsory for the bakery to open at 11pm as it used to! Did pizza, pasties and freshly baked bread ever taste so nice than after 8 pints of "Tally Ho!".

Two more suggestions;-

Bring back the Bass barrels on the slate behind the public bar in the Victoria

Have a bike rack at Whitestrand, it is easier to park a Car or a Motorcyle than a push bike in Salcombe, it would also go well with the new cycle path to Marlborough

I didnt mean like a Sainsburys or Tesco more like a cheaper version of the old one where FatFace now is....can't believe I cant remember the name of it...Durrants (or is that the butcher in Chillington)?? Must be age....my mind has gone blank?

We need Salcombe Chandlers back! Rent should be low enough to allow Geoff or Scud to be in the town, instead of shops that sell lamps made of driftwood for £4gazillion!

ellcis or somithing like that

Yes that's it...wasnt it owned by the Durrants...I think Brett was the son?!?!

Ellis'...

When we used to come on holiday (live here now) we used to have the Ellis's challenge, how long could you last without using Ellis's (which if they were around now you would be calling a rip off). Usually could last the whole holiday.

I too, think they should re-open the Marine Hotel. OOdevon, have you got any news on the hotel?

I can't see the hotel re-opening, I think it will be let to fall into decay until redevelopment is the only viable option

There have been a few Russian "financier" types seen looking at the Marine recently. Who knows.....they may be our salvation.

I know that bringing the Marine up to scratch won't be cheap and yes, we're in a recession - but surely a financier / hotelier can see the potential?? If I had the money (hah!) I would turn it in to a very stylish boutique style hotel (longhand for poncey and expensive!)............. beautiful suites with fabulous accesories in terms of robes, towels and lotions and potions......... ohhhhh I'm getting quite carried away...!! lol

I haven't heard of any plans to re-open it...I think the long-term plan is...as pointed in the comments here...to leave it to decay, become an eyesore and then the planners will be only to willing to pass anything just to get it looking better....

I had a friend stay there last year for the Red Arrows (that never were) and it was in a pretty sorry state inside. But there aren't many hotels with such an enviable position in such an upwardly mobile setting such as Salcombe...I find it hard to believe that it could not make a shed-load of money for someone as a nice normal hotel!?

Yes but it would have to be valued at a viable price as a hotel, which I guess is less than the perceived value for re-development. I assume that it is sitting on somebodies books at a pretty high value for a hotel. It needs a total refurb and somebody with money and vision, like Bob Northcott in the sixties.

My guess is that it takes less to set up and run a country house hotel than the Marine.
