Excited; about the Salcombe festival!!!!

Well, The Salcombe Festival is approaching fast and what a blinder it looks like it's going to be! Taking place between the 12th and 14th of June the line-up and the street entertainment looks set to be a real treat.

One of the headline acts will be the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra on the Friday evening, they are so good they were invited to play at the Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall!

There are also classic keel boats from all over the South West taking place in a 5 race regatta along with a sail parade on the Sunday morning for the non racers. This will include the classic keel boat designed and raced by Uffa Fox; Vigilant.

Saturday night on Whitestrand sees The Red Bullets performing along with Kingsbridge's very own Rhythm Machine who are bound to get the evening up and kicking!

Sunday daytime sees The Red News bring some pretty good blues to Whitestrand.

Add in a whole host of street entertainment throughout Saclombe and North Sands and it should be a very very good weekend for all the family...and don't forget if you want the nights to last longer there is always the bus to Dudley's...sorry I mean Knights....no hang on I mean Fusion.....

So there is no need to be anywhere else on the Weekend of June 12th to 14th!!

Well I'm very excited about the festival - and no not JUST for the extra money it'll bring (hopefully :)). I've listened to all the tales of how great the music festival is - so pleased to say - bring it on.....maybe next year the new Salcombe gospel choir 'Honest Gospel' can make a guest appearance. On that note - can anyone hold a tune? If so come to Holy Trinity on Thursday night at 7.30. (hope you don't mind me advertising on your blog OOdevon x

Always a great weekend. book your accommodation now to avoid the rush.If the weathers good, with June's light evenings, a good time is guaranteed.

Today was the first time i have looked at this blog....looking back at past comments etc I cannot believe how negative it seems to be towards second-home owners and some other local business owners!!!! OODevon often portrays the town and its people in a bad light and although it is not always a bed of roses, it remains a special and unique place which we need to preserve.

Salcombe relies on the visitors who share a passion for the estuary and the town, and locals just would not survive without the tourism industry. Locals need to support each other too, and not back-stab each other before some businesses have even had a chance to open. Seems somewhat unfair.

Also using the blog as an 'advert' for the Salcombe Festival does make me wonder about the identity of OODevon - must be a local but has he/she no longer got their heart in the right place???

Surely the key to reducing tension between locals and second-home owners is to improve community spirit and that starts at home here in Salcombe, between locals. From what I have read, this blog seems to just make it worse! Lets put all our energies into making 2009 a successful and happy one for everyone involved - supporting each other will make for a better environment for all of us. If you feel we have lost that sense of belonging in the community, lets recreate it in a positive way, and lets start now.

I totally agree with "anonymous",if OODevon has got so many issues with local business and visitors, perhaps he is living in the wrong place!!

what issues do I have with local businesses and visitors? If I have proffered a view on a local business it will based on my experience there...as with Dusters...RIP.

I just present both sides.

I don't for one minute think that Salcombe would be half the place it is without the visitors and second home owners....you wont have seen me have a go at holiday makers...they are the bread and butter of Salcombe...

I admitted I was wrong about the Salcombe Coffee Company...it is indeed great!

What people tend to forget is that there are a whole host of locals with families going back generations who can't afford the nice houses or dining out in posh places like Dick and Will's etc...who caters for these people? We are in danger of losing these local families and with it will go such things as the primary school and many local people who provide cleaning and other services that Salcombe's wealthier residents won't provide...

Salcombe could become a transient town of wealthy people and not the Salcombe we all know and love....

For me it's the mix of all these people that makes Salcombe what it is...

You won't find anyone that loves Salcombe more than me...

don't tell me that more places have closed in salcombe.... are you saying that dusters has now closed?

Anonymous said...

As far as I am aware it isn't going to reopen....not official though....

The good news for Salcombe is that self catering accommodation reservations (to end of Feb) are well up on the same period in previous years. This is undoubtedly due to more people staying in the UK for 2009 holidays. Additional people here equates to more income for all businesses catering for our visitors - lets offer the very best service to make sure they come back, ....and make some money at the same time!!

I have heard a rumour that the Marine Hotel is not reopening as planned in April and that the leisure part is now closed..... does snyone have an update on this?? what will happen with the memberships to Waves and what the plan is with the hotel given their pending development plans????

Anonymous said...

I believe that is true yes...Waves is currently shut and the photo place Blue Snapper has moved into the beauty salon at the back...

From what I have heard this is the last we will see of the current Marine...

The new one still doesn't have planning permission....so are we going to have a run down waterside building progressively getting worse??? Let's hope not...

That would be a real shame. I don't know how busy they were, but why couldn't they just have left it as it was?

Suggest that you check out the facts ref. Dusters, it looked pretty open to me this weekend. Would hate to think that the Salcombe blog is wrongly slandering someone.

Thanks for the update on dusters - good to hear that they were open at weekend...... love that place and thought such a shame and a surprise if they had shut. Thanks for the good news!

The info I got was from a usually very reliable source, very close (and I mean VERY close) to the proprietor...lets hope it does stay open as Salcombe doesn't have enough restaurants in the summer...that's the catch I suppose not enough in the summer...too may for the rest of the year...nothing is ever easy!

What a fascinating insight into all that is going on in Salcombe. The festival sounds great. Your blog is fabulous.

We drove round Salcombe yesterday & were amazed at the building work going on! Recession - what recession? What is the building above the Winking Prawn going to be? We note that opposite Cable cottage at North Sands, within the drive to the Moult, a huge section of the cliff has been dug out, which suggests a new development site? Surely this is entirely inappropriate to the adjacent period Edwardian cottage.

I think a lot of these projects were underway before the credit crunch. There are three sites on Devon Road and Allenhayes which have been closed down.
