The lease on Restaurant 42 has been sold to the owners of the Salcombe Delicatessen. It's not a restaurant I have been to so I can't pass comment on it's quality and if it's demise is a bad thing, but the prices suggest it should have been very very good! However prices are often misleading ...especially in Salcombe where most things are overpriced!
I am hoping it won't follow in the footsteps of the Delicatessen which has become far too poncy for it's own good.
The name is apparently going to be "Dick and Will's Waterside Bar" which to me suggests it may be somewhat pretentious...however, I will reserve judgment.
Let's hope it adds to Salcombe for everyone and not just the wealthy...not since the early days of "Spinnakers" has this restaurant had a decent reputation in the town. Is that about to change? I have my doubts...

I'm sure the food in Restaurant 42 was fabulous, but I was always put off by the prices. Lets hope it becomes more accessible under new ownership.
That explains why the increased prices at Restaurant 42 this last year! Knew it was up for sale last year and they didnt manage to sell it. Best of luck to the new people from the deli.... not convinced by the name though!? Anyone know when the new place opens etc etc?
salcombe desperateley needs a bar/bistro ....bring it on!!!
On several occassions over the past couple of years we've eaten at Restaurant 42, however this year we noticed they'd put their prices up when we went in July, having been earlier in April, which put us off from going again. We understand from speaking to the new owners when we went last in October, that they'll be opening early next year. Not sure about the new name though...
Not surprised to see 42 close - went there once,- despite booking was ignored by the owner when we arrived - went on chatting to his mates while we stood there like lemons!!! When the first course arrived waitress, (his wife i think) nearly let it slip off plate and pushed it back on with her fingers! Never returned - (always go to the excellent Galley now).High prices as well - restaurants that act like that don't deserve to survive even in rip off Salcombe.Hope the new folks put it back on the map - doesn't matter what the name is if it offers a good alround eating experience and value for money. ps do you see Jack Spratts has closed and premises are to rent? pps Winter dinghy park boat storage up 25% this year, more evidence of SHDC's contempt for the hand that feeds it
As an owner of a flat in the Salcombe we are dreading the extra noise from waterfront boozers.
We have eaten at Restaurant 42 a few times with increasingly disappointing results. I am glad to hear it has gone and hope something replaces it to take me back to my teenage glory days drinking gin, lime and sodas at Spinnakers!
The food was ok but not spectacular but the worst aspect was undoutedly the owners who were incredibly patronising and high-handed. They would fuss round the table convinced that there customers had never eaten anywhere comparable and would also wisk plates away as soon as you took your last mouthful. I had to remonstrate with one young waitress for actually trying to remove my plate before I had even finished. Over-priced, completely lacking in atmosphere and off-hand staff - not a good dining experience. Far more fun at The Galley, Oyster Shack and I'm pleased to say, Dusters which I haven't visited for a long time but seems to be making a come-back. As for Kings Arms - I absolutely will not eat there until the latest manager has gone - we used to rely on this one for great food, relaxed dining and reasonable prices when out with our 5 children. During our last visit, the women running the place quite simply could not have been ruder - and it wasn't because she was rushed off her feet - there was only one other table of 3 in there. I've since seen her whilst drinking in the bar and realise that she is permanently that rude and miserable!
2009 is going to be a pretty tough year for our much loved Salcombe, and any attempt by (new or existing) traders to offer better value for money to our visitors needs to be applauded rather than be put down.
Remarks like 'poncy' or 'pretentious' and expressing 'doubt' about potential success is mean mouthed in the extreme, and utterly inappropriate.
Acknowledge the huge effort that is being made by the new owners to ensure that both Salcombe locals and visitors enjoy good value for money from this new restaurant.
Your comments in your blog are too negative, and potentially very damaging. You should be ashamed.
